Launching Britannia

Like many projects it all started with a lady wandering through our door with the first question – “Is this the Men’s Shed?” and then the second – “would you like to make something for us?” (We are tucked away into corner of a warehouse full of scenery and props at TFT after all!)

A group of us were busy setting a good example of what we get up to – having tea, biscuits and jawing! Yes, it was Woodies Wednesday and we should have been woodturning but we do get ‘around tuit!’ occasionally (what else – all woodturning is round!)

Carol is from St. Mary’s Church, Warsash Flower Arrangers and asked if we could make a boat like structure to represent the Royal Yacht Britannia into which they would place a flower arrangement. This was to be their entry to a Jubilee Flower Festival at St Peter’s Church Titchfield (24 – 26th June 2022).

As a trustee, I took it upon myself to take details and offer brief ideas. Soon others got involved; Googling for images, dimensions etc. It soon became evident that a model of 3 feet long or so, if to scale, would produce a hull of less than 4 inches high and wide – not suitable for a flower arrangement! It became clear that this would be a ‘representation only’!

The project was added to the new ‘Project Board’ in the tea room for volunteers to take it on board (pun!). Like the Marie Celeste, no one came on board! So I went it alone...

The photos from a basic plank with containers to ‘launch’ tell the rest of the story...

And then Treetops

Treetops in wood. Treetops in wood.

John C was approached by organisers of one of the Titchfield Jubillee Celebration groups to create a lasting memorial of the start our Monarch's reign. What could be more appropriate than pictures of The Treetops Hotel where she first learned of her elevation to the highest position in the Country, burned into wood? Fantastic memorial John - well done.
